MATTHE D. LIEBERMAN, an associate professor of psychology at UCLA, received his Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University in 1999. His research interests include such social cognitive neuroscience topics as self-control, self-awareness, automaticity, social rejection, and persuasion. He has published in numerous journals. including Science, Nature Neuroscience, Annual Review of Psychology, American Psychologist, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and his research has been funded by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Science Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

His work has received coverage in Time, Scientific American, Discover, and multiple BBC documentaries. Lieberman is the founding editor of the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience and was the 2007 recipient of the APA Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology. He is currently working on a book tentatively titled Experience Shrugged: The Rise of Simulated Experience in Mental Life and the Modern World.
