A joint effort with my former student, Dr. Clinton Jenkins, of the University of Maryland: a map of a portion of southeastern Brazil, with the City of Rio de Janeiro at the bottom left. Only areas with substantial remaining "rainforest" — technically tropical moist forest — are coloured, the colours show the numbers of threatened species of birds, and are draped over a 3-D rendering of elevation. This is a map that immediately conveys where (and what) conservation actions are most needed to save biodiversity. And, indeed, with Brazilian colleagues we have not connected the red "island" to the rest of the areas with forest restoration.
