BRIAN
ROTMAN is Professor of Comparative Studies at Ohio State University.
A mathematician and writer who has lectured for many years about the
nature of mathematics as a symbolic activity, his most recent books
are Mathematics
as Sign: Writing, Imagining, Counting; Signifying
Nothing: the Semiotics of Zero; and Ad
Infinitum ... The Ghost in Turing's Machine. He published a
popular account of his concept of non-Euclidean numbers in the magazine
The Sciences. He is currently using robotics and ethology to
construct a model of the psyche which would illuminate technology's
